Here is me standing up on my soap box: I wanted to say please don't worry too much about your child rushing into college preparedness. The other day a patron came into the library asking what programs or classes we have for a 4 year old and a 9 year old for college exams. A FOUR YEAR OLD!
It is perfectly normal for a child to enter Kindergarten without knowing their full alphabet or numbers so how is it that they are supposed to take a college exam class? A child's entire elementary, middle, and high school education is there to prepare them for college. Taking college exams shouldn't need to be "prepped" from 4 years old, a child should be able to pass the exam based on all of their years of experience and schooling. Being a young child is the time to explore, try out new things, and really just discover what it is that interests them most. It is of course important for a child to be a good student, and perhaps not be plopped in front of a TV day and night, but that's why you're here as a parent. You're here to help guide your child to new discoveries, read with your child, be supportive, and loving. So I ask of you to enjoy your time with your child, enjoy seeing your child make new discoveries, and have trust that your child will grow up brilliant under your joyful guidance. Remember that it's okay to breathe when you're a parent. Much love, xoxo.
