The Midwife Book Review

"The Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy and Hard Times" by Jennifer Worth is an astonishing book. Worth was in her early 20s when she started working as a midwife at Nonnatus House, which was run by nuns and located in the heart of the London Docklands. Initially one would think, "Oh, London! I would have loved to see what London was like in the 1950s." But Worth's experience was quite different. After World War II London's Docklands were in horrid conditions: buildings in rubble, tarps used as roofs, deadly smog, rats, prostitution, close quarters, one bathroom to an entire building, no running hot water, the workhouse howl, and not to mention a patient who had 25 babies and was only in her 40s! Worth did not realize what she was getting herself into when she became a midwife for the London Docklands, but looking back she never would have given up the experiences she had.

Not only does Worth explain London's history during her stories, but also includes an interesting appendix explaining the Cockney dialect and a glossary for understanding medical terms (Worth does not "dumb down" this book for her readers). Worth includes personal, professional, patient, and medical stories all which I could never have imagined myself. Her memoir left me intrigued, baffled, repulsed, heartbroken, and inspired. I felt pretty much every kind of emotion during this great read! Because this memoir was such an unusual and interesting story I read it quite quickly and enjoyed every moment. I highly recommend it to anyone with a strong stomach and heart!

February is a month for lovers, so let's help fill that heart of ours with love, by reading February's read: "The Pure Heart of Yoga: Ten Essential Steps for Personal Transformation." by Robert Butera, Ph.D. As some of you may know I have been practicing yoga for over 10 years now, but have never read a book about its philosophy. Butera has studied meditation and yoga for over 25 years and currently trains yoga instructors and publishes "Yoga Living" magazine. Therefore his combination of skills, teacher and writer, should make this a wonderful book.

Northern Lights Craft

The real Northern Lights
If you didn't get the chance to see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) this year, you and your little budding artists can paint them! I have taught the Northern Lights watercolor painting with toddler through elementary, and it's always been a good time! It's also a great way to show the integration of Science and the Fine Arts.

Supplies: Cup with water, paintbrush, water color paints or watercolor colored pencil, paper towel, water color paper, scissors, pencil, black construction paper, and water color paper

A 3-Year Old's Northern Lights 
How To:
1. Paint watercolor paper using watercolors. Any color and any design works with this project. Just let your imagination run wild! (Tip: Clean brush between colors so the colors do not become muddy)
2. While the watercolor painting is drying, fold black construction paper in half (hot dog for a horizontal painting/hamburger for a vertical painting). Draw a landscape (can be detailed or as simple as drawing wavy lines. This will be a silhouetted landscape)
3. Cut out landscape design

10 Habits of Happy Mothers

If you're in the midwest I'm sure you're well aware that the feel like temperature of today is around -44, and most schools and even some businesses have closed for the day. So it's the perfect time to pull out a good book and read!


December's read was "The 10 Habits of Happy Mothers: Reclaiming Our Passion, Purpose and Sanity"  by Meg Meeker, M.D. Meeker is a pediatrician, a mother, and an author. I must say that I quite enjoyed curling up in bed after Zooey fell asleep for the night to read this book. It was very uplifting and thought provoking. Meeker's book has 10 chapters each with a quality of a happy mother with at least two stories as an example of this necessary quality. Each chapter ends with ways to keep this quality in your life.

On a similar topic, a couple months ago my sister recommend I watch the BBC show, "Meet the Midwife". It has inspired January's read: Jennifer Worth's"The Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times." Worth reflects on being a midwife in London's post war East End. It was a difficult experience that helped her grow as a person and impact hundreds of lives.
